Over 30 Years & Going Strong, New Promoter Sets the Pace at
Grayslake Antique Market
Bob has a lot of experience promoting shows and antique markets, so watch
out antique world, this is going to be one of the best when he puts all of his effort
into it. The location is perfect at the Lake Country Fairgrounds, halfway between
Milwaukee and Chicago. The whole
area is expanding with growth of new businesses and new homes so the future
is bright for this Antique Market, which has been there consistently for over 30
years. He is assisted at the show by Eileen Potasnik who is also very
experienced, between the two of them they have everything running smoothly. I know the day that I was there I was impressed at how well everything runs. The first thing that Bob has done differently is to make it a two day show (saturday and sunday). Dealers can leave and set back up on Sunday giving them more flexibility and opportunities for selling and buying. The show now has over 500 dealers and growing. The market is open year round and is held every 2nd weekend monthly. He also has lighted show cases to rent which no other market has.
There are four large buildings with dealers set up inside, so the show goes on rain or shine. Inside you will find dealers from across the midwest and the country selling a wide variety of items from oil paintings to art glass. Surrounding
the buildings are the outdoor dealers who display everything imaginable. If you can't find it here at Grayslake, it doesn't exist!
Something different for an antique market is a large and complete indoor cafeteria
with all new tables and chairs. The room is big with seating for hundreds and has
a menu to fit anyone's taste. The day I was there it was very warm outside and nice and cool inside, so I took a few extra breaks in the cafeteria. It's nice to
have a place like this to sit down and rest your legs. You will like this little extra! The food is excellent and the service is quick!
I spoke with Jim and Ruth Huebner owners of Sterling Antiques, one of the many
dealers, as I went around taking pictures for this article. They told me they have
been doing the Grayslake Market for 32 years and love it. They had a booth full
of great antique items like a large cast iron floor train priced at only $375
complete with all the hooks between the cars. You will like this couple, they were fun to talk to and very knowledgeable. Then I met subscriber and dealer Erwin Garris. He had a booth full great prints, which my favorite was a collection of
twelve advertising calendars with fishing scenes done by Hintermeister from 1937 to 1949 with the 1947 missing. He told me the 1937 calendar was something the
other dealers had never seen before. The group was priced at $1200 and a
bargain at that. I met so many great dealers at this antique market it was fun
talking with them. Dealer, Mike Weirtz who had some incredible military items.
My favorite was a mint Zippo lighter from WWII showing a map of Germany with a bomber flying over it and a black bird. It's mint, never been lighted and its genuine. Don't wait on this one, you will never find another like it in this condition.
Bob also promotes a lot of other shows throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. You
just have to check out the Shawano Antique Market held at the Shawano County
Fairgrounds which runs every Sunday thru October. No reservations needed so
just show up and start selling. This is also held rain or shine with indoor spaces
available, don't miss it. When in town, stop in and say hi to our crew at Auction
Action Antique News.
If you're a dealer and looking for a great place sell you can contact Zurko's
Midwest Promotions located in Shawano, Wisconsin at 715-526-9769 or email Robert Zurko at RobertZurko@aol.com . Call and get their complete schedule of antique shows and markets.
Bob puts on some fabulous antique tours to Europe with bargain prices for the
complete trip. This is a good way to travel in a group like this and have all the
travel plans laid out for you. It's all done for you and find great antiques too!
Bob advertises that tour buses are welcome at the Grayslake Market and he
has a special for early buyers. Loads of
free parking right on the fair grounds is available and close up to the gate. They have indoor and outdoor dealers. Well I hope to see you at one of these fine antique markets!
